Details of the charities are below. Please read the details and click on the links before deciding, then cast your vote via the email link that has gone out to all Students and staff email addresses.
Breakthrough Cancer Research: Based in Cork and building on over 16 years of cancer research, they focus on developing new treatments for poor prognosis and currently incurable cancers. Last year they worked with CIT & UCC on developing a cookbook for patients experiencing involuntary weight loss.
Marymount Hospice: Based in Cork, this is a Specialist Palliative Care Unit and their services are provided free of charge to anyone who needs them. They offer a 44-bed in-patient unit and also offer care and support to those patients who choose to be cared for in their own homes.
The Samaritans (Cork Branch): They are made up exclusively of volunteers, operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. In 2014 the Cork branch received over 48,000 calls with over 1,100 of these drop in callers to the Centre. They also provide support through email and text. All money donated to them is put directly into supporting their continued presence and service in Cork and Ireland.
St Vincent de Paul (Covering Cork & Kerry): Fighting poverty in all forms through direct practical assistance from local volunteers. SVP offer friendship, advice and support with life’s most basic essentials – food on the table, coal to heat homes, education support. SVP supports students to allow them to continue with their studies in CIT.
