The Vice President for Welfare is a full-time officer of MTU Cork Students’ Union, elected by the student body to represent and support students on all matters relating to welfare, wellbeing, and equality. VP Welfare Officer is here to ensure every student feels supported throughout their time in MTU Cork, whether that’s through providing information, advice, referrals, or running campaigns that promote positive mental health, inclusivity, diversity and student wellbeing.
The VP Welfare works closely with MTU support services, local organisations, student organisations and national bodies, such as AMLÉ to make sure students know their rights and can access the supports they need.
Campaigns & Events
Throughout the year, the Welfare Officer organises a range of awareness weeks and campaigns, including (but not limited to):
- Sexual Health & Guidance (S.H.A.G) Week– promoting and normalising sexual health, and guidance.
- Positive Mind & Body Week – focusing on mental and physical wellbeing.
- Safety Week – raising awareness around personal and community safety as a student.
- Raise & Give (RAG) Week – combining charity fundraising with student engagement.
- Ongoing campaigns on topics such as, consent, accommodation, equality, and cost-of-living supports.
Committees & Representation
VP Welfare Officer sits on a variety of committees to represent student interests, including (but not limited to):
- Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committees (such as AMLÉ Equality & Citizenship Working Group)
- Health & Safety Committees
- Mental Health & Wellbeing Groups (University and Southern Region Based)
- National and local welfare networks (such as AMLÉ Welfare Working Groups)
Supports & Advocacy
Students can approach the VP Welfare for confidential advice and guidance on issues such as:
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Sexual health
- Accommodation
- Financial hardship
- Equality, Diversity & inclusion matters
